Unit IEnglish I students begin their freshman experience with a multi-genre unit designed to introduce them to critical reading approaches to a variety of texts. Students will build stamina as independent readers using sustained silent reading in self-selected texts, and work through difficult moments in fiction, drama, poetry, and nonfiction using various approaches to comprehension. From there, students will examine multiple entry points into making interpretations about a text, and supporting those interpretations with text evidence. Students will evaluate which words in their reading best support their thematic conclusions, and will focus on the way an author wields dialogue, imagery, and specific connotations to establish the tone of the reading. Students will practice supporting interpretations through multiple writing experiences.
